Lancaster General Hospital (LGH) was again recognized among U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals for 2016-17. The hospital, which is part of University of Pennsylvania Health System (Penn Medicine), earned a best ranking in two specialties and was ranked fifth among Pennsylvania hospitals. Additionally, LGH earned “high performing” rankings in five specialties.
“This national recognition affirms the dedication of our exceptional physicians and caregivers, who provide safe, quality, compassionate care to every one of our patients,” said Jan Bergen, President and CEO of Lancaster General Health. “Of the 5,000 U.S. hospitals evaluated, only 153, or about 3 percent, earned a national ranking in at least one specialty, making our honors in two specialties even more significant.”
Lancaster General Hospital ranked “best” nationally in the specialties of Gastroenterology & GI Surgery, and Pulmonology. LGH’s “high performing” specialties are: Diabetes & Endocrinology, Geriatrics, Nephrology, Neurology & Neurosurgery, and Orthopedics.
More than 4,500 hospitals were evaluated by U.S. News & World Report for their performance in nine inpatient surgical procedures and chronic conditions: colon cancer surgery, lung cancer surgery, heart bypass surgery, aortic valve surgery, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, hip replacement, knee replacement, heart failure and COPD. While 1,628 hospitals earned the top rating of “high performing” in at least one category, LGH is one of only 63 hospitals in the nation to earn the “high performing” rating in all nine types of care.
Other Penn Medicine hospitals earned top honors in the rankings. Together, the combined enterprise of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Penn Presbyterian Medical Center was ranked as the 9th best hospital in the United States on the magazine’s “Honor Roll,” and was ranked first in the state of Pennsylvania. Chester County Hospital was ranked 12th in the state.
