Wheelchair & Seating Assessment

Wheelchair and Seating Assessment

Mobility is a key to independence. If you or a loved one needs a wheelchair or scooter, Lancaster General Health offers a wheelchair and seating assessment program to help you learn more about the mobility technologies available to meet your needs. Our experienced and certified assistive technology professional will explain your options, help ensure that your new wheelchair or scooter is a good fit for you or suggest changes, such as new cushioning or a solid backrest, that can make your existing equipment more comfortable.

Who benefits

The wheelchair and seating assessment program may be beneficial for individuals with:

  • Alzheimer’s
  • Back pain due to improper seating
  • Brain injury
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Frailty
  • Lower limb amputation
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Pressure ulcers due to improper seating
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Stroke

What to expect

Mobility technologies include power wheelchairs, wheelchair/scooters and manual wheelchairs. When you are referred to the wheelchair and seating assessment program, our assistive technology professional will meet with you and your preferred equipment vendor to determine which technology you are eligible for, based on an evaluation of your medical needs. We offer pressure-mapping to assess various cushions and seating systems. If custom-molded seating is necessary, more than one session may be necessary to complete the evaluation. We can also help you learn to use your equipment safety. We also work with your physician and vendor to help you navigate your insurance coverage for your wheelchair.

For more information

Your physician or equipment supplier can refer you for evaluation. A physician prescription is required for the wheelchair and seating assessment program. If you would like to know more, please call 717-544-4636.
