Medical & Dental Staff awards honor exemplary achievements – and more than 750 years of service

The commitment and contributions of 43 physicians and advanced practice providers were recognized at the Medical and Dental Staff awards event July 11.

Medical & Dental Staff Secretary/Treasurer Jennifer L. DeLutis, M.D., presented the awards, along with LG Health Board Chairman Philip Wenger.

2018 Physician Achievement Awards

Innovation/Science/Publication – Exemplary contribution of creative and innovative thinking, contribution to the medical literature or advancement of the science of medicine

Kevin A. Strauss, M.D., Medical Director, Clinic for Special Children, who has co-authored more than 60 peer-reviewed journal articles and given numerous lectures about medical, scientific and cultural issues all over the world.

Community Service Award – Exemplary contribution to medical care of the underserved or other vulnerable sectors of our patient population

Althea N. Keener, M.D., Lancaster Health Center, advocates for her patients with her commitment to understanding and respecting their unique needs, cultures, values and preferences.

Mission Award - Exemplary contribution to medical care provided abroad – for taking part in the effort to bring health care to people who usually do not have the opportunity to see a doctor or other health-care provider

Thomas J. Gates, M.D., Lancaster Health Center, and Crischelle L. Shank, M.D., Walter L. Aument Family Health Center. Dr. Gates lived and provided medical care in a remote and primitive area of Malawi for almost two years. Dr. Shank spent seven years as medical director at Malamulo Hospital in Malawi, transforming it from a hospital that was ready to close to one that was financially stable.

Patient Advocacy – Exemplary commitment to the patient experience (care quality and safety, and patient satisfaction), community health and health-care cost efficiency

Holli S. Viscusi, M.D., Lancaster Emergency Associates, spearheaded creation of a rapid treatment unit and played an instrumental role in additional efforts to improve patient experience within the ED.

Teamwork & Communication – Exemplary advancement of a positive and cooperative care environment and/or advancement in medical care team communication

Jennifer L. DeLutis, M.D., LG Health Physicians Hospitalists, also serves as a Physician Advisor and Medical Director of the LGH Observation Unit. She has a unique gift for balancing assertiveness and guidance with thoughtfulness and kindness.

Advanced Practice Provider Achievement Awards – Recognition of APPs who have excelled in effective communication with other team members and patients, and anticipation of health-care team needs
