Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health recently implemented new technology to optimize patient safety at Lancaster General Hospital.

A technology monitoring system for patients at risk for elopement is now in use in the north towers (4N-8N). The technology reduces the chance of an elopement.

If a patient is determined to be at risk for elopement, a trained staff member will apply a monitoring tag to the patient’s identification band to ensure that the patient remains on the assigned nursing unit. The monitoring system includes an auditory alert to notify staff members when a patient is attempting to leave the unit.

A video monitoring system with audio capabilities is being installed in inpatient rooms to decrease patient falls and injury. A pilot is in progress on 7 Frederick, 7 Lime and 4 East/West.

The system includes a camera and two-way audio. Patients who are at risk for injury are monitored from a central location to ensure safety. The cameras can be turned to privacy mode when needed. Patients are monitored via live stream only; there is no recording.

These new technologies do not replace routine nursing care, including regular rounding. Patients who need assistance still will use the nurse call button.
