When it comes to joint replacement surgery, choosing the right surgeon is important, but it’s not the only decision you’ll need to make. Much of your experience prior to, during, and after your surgery will be determined by where you have your surgery. You are encouraged to talk to your surgeon about your options for surgery location.

The Orthopedic Center at Lancaster General Hospital is a nationally recognized orthopedic program that is dedicated exclusively to joint replacement and other orthopedic procedures.

Both inpatient and same-day outpatient joint-replacement surgeries are performed at the Orthopedic Center

What to Expect

Before Surgery

Our team will guide you through every step to make sure you are well prepared for surgery, whether it is inpatient or same-day outpatient surgery.

This includes:

  • Coordinating pre-surgical tests and consultations
  • Reviewing exercises to strengthen the muscles around your joint
  • Home safety assessment with nurse via phone call or home visit
  • Joint replacement education class (register here or call 717-544-4636)
  • Connection to programs and services to optimize your health, such as smoking cessation and healthy weight management programs (to decrease surgical risks and improve recovery)
During Surgery

On the day of your surgery, your family may wait in a comfortable waiting area or join you in your private pre-op bay, where you meet the team members who will care for you. Your surgery takes place in one of our state-of-the-art, operating suites.

After Surgery

Recovery and rehabilitation begin right after surgery, regardless if your stay is a few hours or days. Our dedicated orthopedic nursing unit includes private rooms and an orthopedic therapy gym. Our nurses specialize in orthopedic and hip and knee joint replacement care and they strive to minimize any pain and help you meet your mobility goals.

All rooms on the orthopedic floor are private, with in-room showers. A dedicated orthopedic therapy gym is staffed by occupational and physical therapists who will help you regain your mobility and practice activities of daily living, such as climbing stairs and getting dressed. We even encourage you to wear street clothes during your recovery. While you are in the hospital, you will be offered the opportunity to try holistic treatments such as massage, Reiki and aromatherapy, to enhance your comfort and healing.

Role of a Coach

We strongly encourage you to designate a coach—a family member or friend who will be available to provide support and encouragement before, during, and after your surgery. Your coach is welcome to join you for the joint education class, all appointments, and physical therapy sessions.

Physical and Occupational Therapy Support

Physical and occupational therapy are integral parts of the post-surgical recovery process. The first session of therapy will take place shortly after your surgery or the next day, depending on your type of surgery.

  • Occupational Therapy: Our occupational therapy team provides therapies in our dedicated Orthopedic Center gym and at your bedside to help you regain independence in self-care tasks like bathing and dressing, kitchen mobility, and transferring in and out of the tub, car and bed.
  • Physical Therapy: Our physical therapy team members work with you to help regain range of motion and strength, focusing on tasks like standing up from seated surfaces, walking, and negotiating stairs. Most of these services take place in our Orthopedic Center gym.

Support After Leaving the Orthopedic Center

You will be encouraged to complete routine tasks on your own to prepare to leave the Orthopedic Center. Simple activities like sitting in a chair for meals, dressing in your own clothes and walking to the restroom with nursing are all activities you will be encouraged to take part in. Our team of therapists will assist you in obtaining equipment such as a walker, crutches or bathroom equipment in preparation for discharge, as needed.

Following your stay at the Orthopedic Center, you may require further support at a rehabilitation hospital, at-home therapy, or follow-up sessions at one of our physical therapy locations. We help you navigate this process as well.
