Everyone can benefit from yoga. You don’t need to be able to put your foot behind your head or have perfect balance.  This August and September, Lighten Up Lancaster County offered free classes to help those who may be overweight feel comfortable and benefit from practicing yoga.

This special series of 12 classes, offered in partnership with Create Karma, aims to reduce stigma about weight and give people the confidence they need to join a group yoga class or practice at home.  Classes are slated to conclude in September.

Lighten Up Lancaster County, formed in 2007 to focus on increasing the number of people at a healthy weight, works to create an environment that supports healthy eating and physical activity.

This unique yoga program was well received as an opportunity for people who might feel intimidated by the gym or a group fitness class to build body confidence and engage in physical activity in a supportive environment. During the classes, participants were given instruction about how to use props to safely practice the poses.
