If you grow your own fruits and vegetables, you are more likely to eat them. To increase access and availability of fresh produce, Lighten Up Lancaster County, with funding from the Heart & Vascular Institute at Lancaster General Health, recently offered raised-bed starter kits for schools and nonprofit organizations that are interested in expanding or starting a garden.
In February, ten schools and nonprofit organizations in Lancaster County were provided lumber, hardware, landscaping materials and soil for two raised beds:
Sacred Heart School
John Beck Elementary School
YWCA Lancaster – SAPCC
Cocalico Care Center
Our Lady of the Angels
The Salvation Army
Luthercare for Kids
The Mix at Arbor Place
St. Anthony of Padua Church
Lancaster Catholic High School
In addition to the raised-bed materials, Lighten Up Lancaster County linked recipients to an extensive network of garden experts and resources. Organizations that received raised beds are encouraged to use the produce for taste-testing and meals at their organization, share with the community, and donate extra produce to local organizations.
