For about half of all breast cancer patients, radiation therapy will be an important part of their treatment plan.

We offer leading-edge technologies to eliminate cancer while preserving healthy tissue. Radiation therapy may be recommended after breast cancer surgery or by itself. The type of therapy your doctor will recommend depends on your diagnosis.


MammoSite® Radiation Therapy

The Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute offers an innovative treatment following a lumpectomy called MammoSite therapy. MammoSite is a type of internal radiation treatment, which means the radiation is delivered from inside the body. Internal radiation therapy is also called partial-breast radiation or brachytherapy.

The MammoSite system precisely targets the tissue where the tumor was located and delivers a high dose of radiation to the tumor bed via a balloon catheter. Patients with early stage breast cancer may be eligible for this type of therapy. Advantages include:

  • Reduced radiation exposure to the heart, lungs, skin and ribs
  • Fewer side effects
  • Shorter course of therapy—five days instead of five to six weeks

External Beam Radiation

External beam radiation delivers radiation from outside the body using a linear accelerator. Using intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) techniques, our doctors can conform the radiation to the specific tumor size and shape. This type of therapy can be used after lumpectomy and sometimes mastectomy.

For breast cancer patients with metastases to the brain, liver or lung, we offer hope with the revolutionary CyberKnife M6 robotic radiotherapy system. Lancaster General Health was the first in the U.S. and second in the world to install this groundbreaking technology, which delivers high-dose radiation with remarkable precision.
