The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends regular colon cancer screenings beginning at age 50, or younger for people at higher risk for developing colon cancer. Although there are several screening methods for colon cancer, the gold standard for screening is a colonoscopy, which enables the doctor to see and remove any polyps in the rectum or colon. During this procedure, patients are under mild sedation. If no polyps are found, the test should be repeated every 10 years.
