Are You Considering Scar Revision?

Injuries and surgeries can sometimes leave unique marks. Our cosmetic surgeons can improve a scar's appearance on nearly any part of the body.

We offer the following types of scar removal procedures:

  • Scar excision: removes the scar and closes the skin with adjacent skin
  • Z- or W-plasty: repositions the original scar along the natural lines of the skin
  • Skin grafting: common for burns, removes the scar and uses skin from another area of the body to cover the scar area
  • Skin flap: similar to a skin graft, the skin and tissue below are moved from another part of the body to cover the scar site

Know that the scar healing process takes about a year. Scars typically start out as red, then tighten, and then relax into a more subtle color. Once the scar completely heals, our cosmetic surgeons can discuss scar revision therapy with you.

Preparation for and recovery after scar revision

During your consultation with one of our cosmetic surgeons, we will develop a plan that helps meet your goals, taking into consideration the extent and location of your scar.

We will explain that recovery times vary because different areas of the body heal differently. For example, surgery to repair a leg scar may take two weeks to heal, while a face procedure may take a week or less.

You can help speed the healing process by following care instructions we provide. We are always available to address any questions and concerns you may have.

Scar treatment risks

Like any surgery, scar revision surgery is typically safe, but does carry risks for infection, bleeding, or the recurrence of the scar. Help avoid these, by following your care team’s pre- and post-operative instructions and reach out to us with any concerns that arise throughout your recovery process.
