Chief Radiation Therapist Jodi Goane submitted the following story on behalf of her team.
A special thanks goes out to our hard-working, compassionate and innovative radiation therapists, physicists, dosimetrists, nurses, patient care assistants, clerical staff, administrative leaders and physicians. You are the best!
Varian Halcyon, which is engineered to revolutionize clinical workflow and enhance virtually every aspect of IMRT, started delivering treatments to our patients Oct. 19.
This machine was designed to expand the availability of high-quality cancer care globally and help save the lives of millions more cancer patients.
Halcyon was designed with a six-point safety system. Patient verification has been integrated into the system workflow. An enclosed gantry will prevent any chance of collision with the patient.
Halcyon was also designed to improve the experience of the clinical team. Simplified and standardized treatments can be completed in just a few consistent steps, which enables the therapists to focus more on the patient.
It should also be noted that the Halcyon machine was invented and developed at Penn Medicine by Dr. James Metz (pictured above with his custom-decorated Halcyon) and his team.
We are so grateful for the Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health support that purchased this new machine for our patients and our team! We are already improving patient care and efficiency.
