Is Your Leg Pain Caused by PAD?

Authors:

You might be surprised to learn that leg pain can be a warning sign that you are at higher risk for heart attack or stroke. The reason? Peripheral artery disease or PAD. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 6.5 million people age 40 and older in the United States have PAD. Many are not aware they have the condition.

That’s why it’s important to be aware of the risk factors and symptoms of PAD and contact your doctor if you have concerns. Our online risk assessment is a great place to start.

What is Peripheral Artery Disease?

In the video above, Dr. Todd Wood of the Lancaster Heart & Vascular Institute diagnoses a patient with the PAD, and develops a treatment plan that includes lifestyle changes and medication to help him stay as healthy as possible.

Dr. Wood notes that PAD is a blockage or narrowing of the arteries. It most commonly affects the legs, but can affect any arteries in the body. PAD is primarily caused by atherosclerosis, a buildup of fatty plaque in the arteries. High cholesterol, high blood pressure, and smoking all contribute to plaque buildup.

Symptoms of PAD

Many people with PAD don’t have any symptoms, but others may experience:

  • Weak or tired legs
  • Trouble walking or balancing
  • Leg pain
  • Tight, aching or squeezing pain in the calf, thigh or buttock, usually after walking a certain distance
