Ahh...Memorial Day. The unofficial start to summer: longer days, lighter foods, farm stands, the beach—I love everything about summer. But, for some, the summer season can feel like a virtual minefield of barbecues and vacations that disrupt routines and cause healthy eating habits to slide. Learn how to enjoy your favorites in a healthier way.

No “Off Season” When it Comes to a Healthy Lifestyle

Remember there is no “on or off” season when it comes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Change your mindset and take pleasure in all of the fresh, healthy foods you can eat, rather than the dwelling on foods you can’t have.

A Healthy Lifestyle Isn’t a Diet

Since a healthy lifestyle is not a diet, you can still enjoy all of your old favorites, just in a much healthier way. In honor of summer weekend, here is a little “Eat this, not that” to help you navigate the season.

Eat this

Not that

Grilled Chicken

Fried chicken or wings coated in sauce

"Naked" burger salad

Cheeseburger on a white bun

Corn on the cob

Macaroni salad

Veggies and dip

Potato chips or other snack foods

Plain seltzer with lemon

Sugary drinks or soda

White wine spritzer

Frozen margarita

Watermelon slices

Cupcakes or cheesecake

Keep Moving

And remember to move. Play games, go for a walk, and mingle rather than sitting down. It will take you away from the food and will help you burn a few more calories at the same time.
