Lancaster General Hospital (LGH) was again recognized among U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals for 2017-18. The hospital, which is part of the University of Pennsylvania Health System (Penn Medicine), was ranked sixth among Pennsylvania hospitals and named a Best Regional Hospital.

“This distinct honor is a result of the extraordinary standard of care that our physicians and staff are known for,” said Jan Bergen, President and CEO of Lancaster General Health. “This ranking is further evidence of our progress in helping our community achieve optimal health and an exceptional experience through innovative and compassionate patient care.”

All other Penn Medicine hospitals also earned top honors in the rankings. Together, the combined enterprise of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Penn Presbyterian Medical Center was ranked as the 10th best hospital in the United States on the magazine’s “Honor Roll,” and was ranked first in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania Hospital was ranked 14th in the state, Chester County Hospital was ranked ninth in the state.

Nearly 5,000 hospitals were evaluated by U.S. News & World Report for their performance. LGH is one of only 48 hospitals in the nation to earn the “high performing” rating in all nine types of common procedures and conditions:

  • Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair
  • Aortic Valve Surgery
  • Heart Bypass Surgery
  • Heart Failure
  • Colon Cancer Surgery
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Hip Replacement
  • Knee Replacement
  • Lung Cancer Surgery

Only the top 10 percent of hospitals evaluated for each specialty earned “high performing” ratings. LGH earned “high performing” rankings in four specialties:

  • Gastroenterology & GI Surgery
  • Geriatrics
  • Orthopedics
  • Pulmonology

The annual U.S. News Best Hospitals rankings, now in their 28th year, recognize hospitals for their exceptional performance, based on outstanding quality, expertise, technology and experience.
