Lancaster General Health’s Blood Bank Donor Center is hosting the Bleed Blue Challenge, a blood donation competition organized by local police departments.
The Manheim Township, East Hempfield, East Lampeter, PA State, Columbia Borough, Millersville Borough, Millersville University and Lancaster City police departments are competing to see which department, along with their community members, can donate the most blood. LG Health invites the community to participate in the challenge by donating on behalf of a select police department.
The competition runs Jan. 6-31, 2020 as part of an initiative to engage and give back to the community. The police department with the most community and police donations will receive a plaque at the end of the challenge.
“During winter weather, flu season and busy holiday schedules, blood donations drop across the country. To ensure an adequate supply of blood during the winter, community members are encouraged to donate blood at the LG Health Blood Donor Center or at one of LG Health’s Community Blood Drives in support of their local police department,” said Brian Stambaugh, Director Laboratory Operations at LG Health. “Our first responders and police are great leaders in caring for our community. This effort is one more contribution they are willing to make.”
Interested participants can visit the LG Health Blood Donor Center Mondays 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday and Thursdays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesdays and Fridays 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. or visit the Blood Drives Events page for a list of upcoming blood drives in the community. To donate blood, participants must be 16 years or older, a minimum of 110 lbs., in good health, have no history of hepatitis, and no tattoos or body piercing within the last 12 months.
