Lancaster General Hospital was recognized as a 2021 Leapfrog Top Teaching Hospital, a national distinction recognizing LGH’s achievements in protecting patients from harm and providing safer health care. The Leapfrog Group is a national watchdog organization of employers and other purchaser widely acknowledged as the toughest standard-setters for health care safety and quality.

The Leapfrog Group’s elite Top Hospital award recognizes the highest quality hospitals as identified through the Leapfrog Hospital Survey. Fewer than 5% of all eligible facilities receive the award, widely considered among the most prestigious an American hospital can receive. A total of 149 hospitals nationwide were selected as Top Hospitals. Among those, Lancaster General Hospital received a Top Teaching distinction. The quality of patient care across many areas of hospital performance is considered in establishing the qualifications for the award, including infection rates, practices for safer surgery, maternity care, and the hospital’s capacity to prevent medication errors.

Last month, Lancaster General Hospital was awarded an ‘A’ in the fall 2021 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, a national distinction recognizing LGH’s achievements protecting patients from harm and providing safer health care. “To again be recognized as a Top Teaching hospital demonstrates that patient safety is a continuous priority at Lancaster General Hospital and throughout the Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health system,” said John J. Herman, CEO at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health. “This award shows the community that our staff has demonstrated a continued commitment to providing the best possible care that our patients expect and deserve.”

“We are pleased to recognize Lancaster General Hospital as a Top Hospital this year,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Even with the continued strain of the COVID-19 pandemic, Lancaster General Hospital has demonstrated an extraordinary dedication to excellent health care in the Lancaster community. We congratulate the board, leadership, staff and clinicians who put their patients first.”

To qualify for the Top Hospitals distinction, hospitals must rank among peers on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, which assesses hospital performance on the highest standards for quality and patient safety.
