Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health’s Women & Babies Hospital earned national and statewide recognition from U.S. News & World Report and its Best Hospitals for Maternity Care.

The hospital, which is part of University of Pennsylvania Health System (Penn Medicine), earned the highest available rating of “high performing” and is ranked first in Lancaster County and the only hospital included in south-central PA.  U.S. News & World Report released its inaugural list of the 237 Best Hospitals for Maternity Care on Tuesday.

U.S. News & World Report evaluates how well hospitals perform in childbirth using C-section rates, newborn complication rates, breast milk feeding rates, early elective delivery rates and if a hospital offers vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC). Top hospitals for maternity care have been recognized as High Performing. Less than 10% of the 2,700 hospitals nationwide that offer maternity services earned U.S. News recognition for being high performing in maternity care.

The 95-bed Women & Babies Hospital is Lancaster County’s most comprehensive facility dedicated to women’s health, offering advanced intensive-care unit for newborns, leading-edge obstetrics, inpatient and outpatient surgeries and GYN services. More than 4,200 newborns were delivered at Women & Babies last year.

Earlier this year, U.S. News & World Report ranked Lancaster General Hospital among the nation’s top-ranked hospitals in the specialties of Urology (36th) and Orthopedics (48th tie). In addition to the national rankings in Urology and Orthopedics, LGH earned national, “high performing” rankings in five specialties: Cancer, Diabetes & Endocrinology, Gastroenterology & GI Surgery, Geriatrics, and Pulmonology & Lung Surgery.
