Traffic changes along North Duke Street will facilitate LGH Emergency Department Expansion project

On Thursday, March 11, on-street parking along both sides of the 500 block of North Duke Street will be temporarily prohibited, to facilitate construction of the Lancaster General Hospital Emergency Department expansion project.

Removing on-street parking will enable a shift in traffic lanes in front of the hospital. That shift, in turn, will create temporary space for the stationing of construction equipment and supplies, as well as deliveries to the job site in front of the hospital.

These changes, which are expected to remain in place until late summer 2022, will enable two southbound lanes of traffic to remain open along North Duke Street during construction. Signage and gating will be installed to guide traffic.

The entrance to the LG Health Downtown Pavilion at 540 N. Duke St. will not be impacted.

The 40,000-square-foot ED expansion along Duke Street will help address increasingly high demand for emergency services throughout the region. After the expansion opens in summer 2022, the hospital’s existing Emergency Department will be renovated and open roughly 18 months later.

When complete, the $182.5 million expansion will nearly double the current Emergency Department to 95 beds, with the capacity to serve 140,000 patients annually. The project is one of the largest investments in facilities and technology in LG Health’s history.
