Lancaster General Hospital (LGH), flagship facility for Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, again earned distinction among Healthgrades’ list of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for 2022. The distinction places LGH in the top 1% of hospitals nationwide for consistently providing clinical excellence across a broad spectrum of conditions and procedures.

Healthgrades is an online resource that helps connect patients with a health-care provider or hospital. LGH, which was named to Healthgrades’ 50 Best Hospitals list in 2021, 2020 and 2019, received multiple additional 2022 honors in cardiology surgery and care, gastrointestinal surgery and care, stroke care, neurosciences, pulmonary care, bariatric surgery, and critical care.

“Being recognized among the nation’s 50 best hospitals for a fourth year in a row by Healthgrades is an honor shared by all at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health,” said John J. Herman, FACHE, CEO of Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health. “This honor is a testament to the commitment of our physicians, clinicians and staff to delivering exceptional care and ensuring patient safety.”

For the 2022 study period (Medicare Fiscal Years 2018-2020), Healthgrades analyzed the performance of nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide across 31 conditions and procedures, including heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, respiratory failure, sepsis and stroke.

Overall, patients treated in hospitals named as one of Healthgrades’ America’s Best Hospitals have, on average, a 27.8 percent lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive this award. If all hospitals, as a group, performed similarly to Healthgrades’ America’s Best Hospitals, 160,256 lives could potentially have been saved.

Chester County Hospital, which is also part of Penn Medicine, also again earned the 50 Best Hospitals distinction for 2022.
