Penn State Health and Tower Health sold their ownership stakes in Horizon Healthcare Services to Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health (LG Health), on Jan. 1, 2022.

The three health systems, which have equally owned Horizon since May 2019, planned a seamless transition with no interruption in care for existing Horizon patients. No changes are planned for Horizon’s leadership or its 150 employees.

“Our change in ownership structure did not change our commitment to provide unsurpassed customer satisfaction and being a highly recommended choice for physicians and other infusion referral sources,” said Carolyn Carlson, president of Horizon.

Horizon provides home infusion and enteral nutrition services in over 40 counties throughout Central and Eastern Pennsylvania. Typically, "infusion therapy” means that a drug is administered intravenously, but the term also may refer to situations where drugs are provided through other non-oral routes, such as intramuscular injections and epidural routes (into the membranes surrounding the spinal cord).

Diseases commonly requiring infusion therapy include infections that are unresponsive to oral antibiotics, cancer and cancer-related pain, dehydration, gastrointestinal diseases or disorders which prevent normal functioning of the gastrointestinal system, and more.  Other conditions treated with specialty infusion therapies may include cancers, congestive heart failure, Crohn's Disease, hemophilia, immune deficiencies, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, are just a few examples.

Horizon and its three health system owners issued updates over the last several weeks to Horizon patients and its network of referral partners and insurers to ensure a smooth ownership transition.
