Vascular Surgery: Why Choose Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health?

Our vascular team provides comprehensive care, from evaluation and diagnosis through treatment and follow-up, for all kinds of vascular diseases. You can expect:

  • Advanced minimally invasive procedures: Our vascular surgeons specialize in the latest endovascular techniques, which treat blocked blood vessels from the inside. Our approach uses catheters (thin tubes) inserted into blood vessels through a tiny puncture for diagnosis and treatment. Our endovascular expertise gives you more minimally invasive options, helping you avoid open surgery.
  • Board-certified vascular specialists: Your care team includes vascular surgeons, vascular medicine doctors and their teams of specialists with extensive training and experience in vascular disease care. We work together to provide a personalized treatment plan for you.
  • The latest technology in surgical suites: Our vascular hybrid operating suites integrate the latest equipment for vascular imaging, minimally invasive procedures and open surgery. The suites reduce radiation exposure for you and improve visibility for our surgeons for more precision in minimally invasive vascular procedures.
  • Nationally recognized vascular imaging: In recognition of our high standards in patient care, our vascular lab has earned accreditation from the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission. Our registered vascular technologists have certifications in vascular technology and use the latest vascular imaging technologies.
  • Focus on improving our care: We’re the only hospital in Lancaster County and one of few in the region that reports our patient outcomes to national registries. Continually measuring our results against national outcomes helps us find new ways to improve your care. In fact, we perform in the top 10 percent for all our patient outcomes.

Types of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery We Offer

Our vascular team has extensive knowledge of the latest endovascular techniques and open vascular surgery procedures. Our treatments and services include:

Vascular Imaging

In our vascular imaging lab, an experienced imaging team uses advanced ultrasound technologies to create pictures of your blood vessels and other areas inside your body. Your doctor uses these detailed images to examine vessels to confirm an accurate diagnosis and determine the best treatment for you.

Catheterization

Our team often uses catheters to access and treat blood vessels. Doctors guide these thin, flexible tubes into the vessel to treat blockages and other conditions. Catheter-based procedures require smaller incisions than open surgery. They can help you have less pain and heal faster.

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Treatment

Your doctor may perform endovascular repair as abdominal aortic aneurysm treatment. In this procedure, your doctor guides a catheter from an artery in the groin area to the aneurysm. They place a synthetic tube, called a stent graft, to support the weakened section and improve blood flow.

Carotid Artery Disease Treatment

Our vascular specialists use ultrasound technology to diagnose and monitor carotid artery disease to help prevent stroke. Our carotid artery disease treatment options include open surgery and minimally invasive procedures, such as transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR).

Chemotherapy Port

Our vascular specialists implant an access device for people receiving ongoing cancer treatment. The doctor implants a small device under the skin that accesses a blood vessel. A chemotherapy port enables the cancer care team to administer chemotherapy through the port to avoid additional injections at each treatment. You experience less discomfort and a reduced chance of infection.

Kidney Artery Procedures

Our vascular experts offer many minimally invasive kidney disease treatments, such as angioplasty and stenting. Our team also provides dialysis access, which helps filter waste from the blood.

Lower Extremity Revascularization

We offer several catheterization procedures to open blocked blood vessels and restore blood flow for people with circulation problems in the legs and feet (peripheral artery disease). Peripheral artery disease treatments we offer include balloon angioplasty and stenting.

Treatment for Vein Conditions

Our team uses several minimally invasive techniques to improve blood flow for people with vein conditions. Also called venous disease, these conditions may result from damage to the veins and reduce blood flow from the arms and legs back to the heart. These treatments help prevent blood clots and maintain healthy circulation.

Inferior Vena Cava Filter for Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

DVT occurs when a blood clot develops in a deep vein in areas such as the leg or pelvis. Our team performs catheterization to place a filter in the inferior vena cava. This is the body’s largest vein, located in the abdomen. It returns blood to the heart from the lower body.

An inferior vena cava filter reduces the risk of pulmonary embolism (PE), a potentially life-threatening complication of DVT. PE occurs when a lung artery becomes blocked, usually by a blood clot from elsewhere in the body.

Conditions We Treat With Vascular and Endovascular Surgery

Our specialists diagnose, treat and manage care for people with a broad spectrum of conditions that affect blood flow. Some of the vascular diseases we treat include:

Neurovascular Conditions

Venous Diseases
