Mason Harnly and family

Mason Harnly dreams of someday being a professional athlete. And type 1 diabetes isn’t stopping him.

When Mason was eight-years-old, his mother Kelly noticed her son exhibiting some classic signs of diabetes–excessive thirst and frequent urination–she scheduled an appointment with his LG Health pediatrician. Mason was referred to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for what Kelly describes as a three-day “boot camp” where the family learned everything they needed to know to care for Mason. They met with a comprehensive team that included a pediatric endocrinologist, social worker, diabetes educator, and nutritionist.

The family is grateful for LG Health’s affiliation with Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia which allows Mason to receive world-class care from a CHOP pediatric endocrinologist, nurse practitioner, and diabetes educator in Lancaster at the LG Health Suburban Pavilion.

Six months after his diagnosis, Mason moved on to using an insulin pump, and is living an active life–playing golf, football, and fishing with his dad.

“My goals and plans are to be better than Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler,” said Mason, who shared the following advice: “If you have type 1 diabetes, do everything you used to do.
