LANCASTER, PA – The last phase of Lancaster General Hospital’s Trauma and Emergency Department Expansion project opened on June 12, completing the multi-year construction project.

Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health leaders will hosted a ceremonial ribbon cutting with employees of the Trauma and ED Department outside the main entrance on Duke Street to celebrate the completion of the multi-phase project. Chief Executive Officer for Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, John J. Herman, as well as the chairperson of LG Health’s Board of Trustees, Carolyn Scanlan, and Chief Nursing Officer, Timothy Zellers, briefly spoke about how the multi-year project reflects one part of a strategic approach aimed at making Lancaster County the healthiest place to live.

“The completion of the expansion and renovation of the Trauma & Emergency Department marks an unprecedented investment in our health system, in terms of patient-care infrastructure, technology and most importantly, its people,” stated Scanlan.

“Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health has set the foundation for a lasting legacy that enhances the health and well-being of generations of families in our community.”

The completed project increased the Emergency Department from 33,000 square feet to 96,000 square feet, providing an increase from 54 beds to 96 beds with the capacity to serve 130,000 patients annually. The department also doubled the number of behavioral-health treatment rooms to 10; doubled the number of Level 1 trauma bays to four; and added 13 new pediatric-treatment rooms.

Additional features includes a dedicated pediatric waiting room, enhanced technology for patient care boards, a dedicated breakroom for EMS workers, a state-of-the-art PATH unit, and advanced security technology.
