The Emergency Medicine team of doctors and care providers at Lancaster General Hospital is committed to providing the exceptional care you and your loved ones need in a medical emergency, including extremely critical situations like stroke, heart attack and trauma. As Lancaster County’s only  Level 1 Trauma Center, we have the expertise and technology to handle virtually any type of emergency right on site, 24 hours a day.

Advanced care close to home

We care for ill or injured adults and children, including those with complex or serious conditions. Walk-in patients and families are greeted upon arrival in a spacious reception area. Our Emergency Department offers all private rooms for triage and treatment to ensure confidentiality and privacy. When you choose Lancaster General Hospital, you can expect:

  • Exceptional physicians and surgeons in every specialty (emergency medicine, cancer, cardiac disease, neurology, orthopaedics, and infectious diseases among many others)
  • No need to be transported out of the county for advanced medical services
  • Trauma/resuscitation at a Level 1 Trauma Center for patients with serious injuries
  • Advanced stroke care by a team accredited by The Joint Commission as a Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center to treat a stroke by removing blood clots from the brain
  • Comprehensive cardiac care and the region’s only ECMO Center of Excellence to act as the heart and lungs when those organs are too weak to work on their own
  • Dedicated pediatric beds specially designed for children and families
  • FastCare for patients with minor ailments including colds, sore throats, small lacerations or cuts, sprains, and simple broken bones
  • Evaluation and treatment for acute behavioral health issues
  • Highly coordinated care with your doctors, specialists, and therapists through a single electronic health record, giving all providers the latest information about you when they need it

Increasing demand for trauma and emergency care

A multi-year expansion project, completed in June 2024, increased the emergency department from 33,000 square feet to 96,000 square feet, providing an increase from 54 to 96 beds with the capacity to serve 140,000 patients annually. The department also doubled the number of behavioral-health treatment rooms to 10; doubled the number of Level 1 trauma bays to four; and added 13 new pediatric-treatment rooms.

The pediatric beds are located in a space specially designed to provide an enhanced experience for patients and their families. This includes a designated registration desk and waiting area for pediatric patients, as well as child life specialist support. If needed, patients have access to the county’s only pediatric inpatient unit, the Seraph-McSparren Pediatric Inpatient Center on the fourth floor of Lancaster General Hospital.

Food options for patients and visitors

Serving as the hospital’s communal hub for patients, visitors and health system employees, the Central Table Eatery features a broad selection of healthy foods and includes stations offering handcrafted food in a comforting environment.
