Parents: How to Prevent Severe Respiratory Infections (RSV, COVID-19, Influenza)

  • Make sure everyone in your family is up to date on COVID-19 and flu vaccines. This will protect them and vulnerable infants too young to be vaccinated.
  • Don’t allow visitors if they are sick or recently exposed to illness. Don’t allow visitors to kiss your infant.
  • If you have a premature baby, consider keeping them home and holding off on any visitors.
  • Breastfeeding can offer your infant additional protection against RSV and other respiratory illnesses.
  • Avoid exposing your children to smoke which increases their risk of severe RSV infection and asthma flare-ups.
  • Keep your kids home from school if they have any symptoms of illness.
  • Use the emergency department only for true emergencies. If in doubt, talk with your doctor about the best place to receive care for your child.

When to Bring Your Child for Medical Evaluation

It can be hard to remember specific symptoms your child may experience that are worrisome. Call us if your child has:

  • Five consecutive days of fever
  • Respiratory distress or labored breathing
  • Fevers that come back after one or two days of no fever within the same illness
  • Cough that does not improve after about two weeks
  • A new rash that occurs during the illness
  • New or worsening pain (anywhere) during the illness

See the information below for scheduling guidance.
