The Lancaster General Health Research Institute offers a number of learning opportunities to students interested in gaining experience in research and health care administration. The number of opportunities available varies through the year and from year-to-year.

Types of Research

The Lancaster General Health Research Institute conducts clinical trials, observational, public health and outcomes related studies. We do not conduct bench or basic science research. Make sure to emphasize skills and experiences related to this type of research when drafting your cover letter and resume.

General Requirements

Candidates must have residency in Lancaster or surrounding areas and have vehicle transportation during the period of the fellowship, internship or volunteer experience. Vehicle transportation may not only be required for transportation to the main office, but to travel to satellite facilities. Applications will be accepted at any time during the year.

Research Fellowship

A research fellowship is designed to be a longer term research experience where individuals are looking for a “gap year” post-baccalaureate research experience prior to medical or graduate school. Fellows perform a multitude of tasks including research study conceptualization and design, data collection, data entry and statistical analysis at a depth and duration greater than a typical summer internship. The fellowship also provides opportunities to help author scholarly papers, posters and presentations.

In addition to providing research work experience, we strongly encourage our fellows to shadow physicians in specialties of their choice. Overall, it is our goal to provide general research experiences that will provide an understanding of how research is executed in a hospital/health care setting, and provide a research foundation that will be helpful in future studies and careers.

Requirements

Education: Must have completed a baccalaureate degree at an accredited college or university with a GPA > 3.5

Majors: Pre-medicine, biological/health sciences or public health

Details

Duration: Approximately 20-40 hrs./week; 9-month minimum time duration
