Amputee Program at Lancaster Rehabilitation Hospital

Our amputee program addresses the medical and functional issues individuals face following the loss of a limb(s). Our dedicated team of rehabilitation professionals includes a rehabilitation physician, rehab nurses, therapists, social worker, case manager, psychologist, dietitian and prosthetist.

Services We Offer

• Wound management and swelling control are initial priorities
• Stump shaping to prepare for fitting of a prosthesis and ambulation training
• Strengthening, balance training and adaptive techniques to successfully accomplish self-care activities and daily routine
• Counseling and a support group to help patients and their families adjust to their disability and maximizing their functional independence

Goals of the Amputee Program

• Maintain a good state of health and assist in preventing secondary medical complications
• Assist with the psychological adjustment to disability and development of coping strategies
• Maximize independence in self-care and activities of daily living
• Independence in mobility skills
• Reduce swelling and shape limb for prosthetic fit
• Evaluate for prosthesis prescription and assist in fitting
• Maintain good skin integrity and remain wound free
• Provide patient and caregiver education and training
• Develop a comprehensive discharge plan
