At the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute, we understand that cancer is a disease that affects more than just the person with the diagnosis. It affects everyone who loves and cares for that person.
We understand the complexities of caring for a loved one during this difficult time. We encourage you to practice good self-care. As a team, we are here to help support you in making this a priority.
The information in this section speaks to some of the most common questions and concerns we hear from caregivers. We encourage you to reach out to the care team for further education and support. The care team at Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute—provider, navigator, nurse, social work, and chaplaincy—is here for you.
Being a caregiver can involve many responsibilities, both medical and non-medical. It’s a good idea to ask for the help of others and have a team-based approach. Make a list of all those who offer to help. This may include family, friends and the medical team. We encourage you to be proactive in organizing your team.
It’s important to not only accept help, but ask for help from those on your team. Using electronic platforms such as Sign Up Genius, Caring Bridge, or a shared calendar can be helpful.
