What Is a Saline Sonogram?

A saline sonogram is an imaging test that checks the inside of your uterus. It takes place between days 5 and 10 of your menstrual cycle. We use the test to look for abnormalities that may be affecting your fertility, such as uterine fibroids, polyps or an abnormal uterus shape. During a saline sonogram, we can also do a tubal patency test to make sure your fallopian tubes aren't blocked.

Other names for this test are saline ultrasound and saline-infusion sonohysterogram (SIS). We do the exam as part of infertility testing for women.

Is a Saline Sonogram the Only Imaging Test I Need?

Some women also need an imaging exam called a hysterosalpingogram (HSG). You may need this test (done at our radiology department) if your saline sonogram and tubal patency test results are abnormal. An HSG is also appropriate for women with a history of ectopic pregnancy or pelvic inflammatory disease. HSG uses X-rays and contrast dye to examine the inside contour of your uterus and make sure your fallopian tubes are open.

What to Expect During Your Saline Ultrasound

Here's what you can expect before your saline ultrasound:

  • The procedure takes place in our office and lasts about 30 minutes.
  • We may recommend you take ibuprofen or acetaminophen before the exam to help you remain comfortable.
  • You don't need sedation for a saline ultrasound.
  • We do a urine pregnancy test before the exam and confirm that it's negative.

During your saline ultrasound:

  • We insert a speculum into your vagina and place a catheter (thin, flexible tube) in your cervix.
  • Saline (sterile salt water) is infused into your uterus and fallopian tubes. The saline helps us see the contours of these structures on an ultrasound. You may feel some pressure or cramping.
  • We use a transducer wand inside your vagina to produce ultrasound images of your uterus and fallopian tubes. We examine the size and shape of these structures. We also look for abnormal growths or blockages.

After your saline ultrasound:

  • You can do normal activities after the procedure and have intercourse the next day.
  • Some women have mild pain, cramps or spotting after the procedure.
  • Contact us right away if you experience severe pain, fever or heavy bleeding.
