When a screening mammogram revealed a questionable area in her breast, Mary Depoe was told she should have a follow-up six months later. She received a reminder letter and phone call from Lancaster General Health, and after a repeat mammogram, was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Mary’s treatment plan at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute included a bilateral mastectomy, reconstructive surgery, and chemotherapy. She was grateful for the opportunity to have DIEP flap reconstructive surgery.
A nurse herself, Mary praised the care she received by nurses at Lancaster General Health.
“The nurses took amazingly good care of me and anticipated my needs. They are especially trained in the post-op care for this procedure and I could tell,” she said.
Mary was also appreciative of the staff from the Cancer Institute who took care of her and guided her throughout a year of chemotherapy treatments.
She is now back to enjoying time with her children and husband and doing the outdoor activities she loves—especially tennis. Mary feels blessed to have convenient, state-of-the-art, compassionate resources available close to home.
“The care that I received was the best I could have hoped for, and to have that here and not have to leave, I think really made me recover quickly,” she said.
